Sam and I love to entertain. OK, let me clarify. Sam loves to get a mic and do stand-up or karaoke or quite frankly anything that will get him some attention. I, on the other hand, love to have people over.
Talk Like a Pirate Party
For the past three years, we have hosted a Talk Like a Pirate party. And this year will be no exception.
We have actually celebrated this holiday for several years – ever since Sam found out there was such a day – September 19.
I don’t know why but this is one holy holiday at our house!
Click here and find out for yourself. It’s an International Holiday. Watch the video and then if you are brave enough go into the web site.
You Can Actually Talk Like a Pirate!
So now that you’ve watched the video and are justifiably in the mood, use this English to Pirate translator and get ready:
Ready? Now it’s time to start planning your party.
Making Entertaining Easy
Since then I have been trying to find ways to simplify entertaining. I would rather be talking with our guests instead of tied to the kitchen.
So at last year’s pirate party, I was determined to simplify. And simplify I did!
There are two simple tips for easy entertaining:
1. Make it a potluck (guests bring something)
2. Make super easy recipes (I mean easy!)
Get Help with Food
We asked everyone to bring an appetizer and give it a pirate name.
We gave them suggestions like:
Peg Legs (chicken drumettes)
Parrot Wings (chicken wings)
Spy Glasses/Telescope (flautas)
Fish and Chips (potato chips + goldfish)
You get the idea.
We let them know up front that we would have Cannonballs (aka meatballs) and Yo Ho Ho Rum Punch.
The Easiest Appetizer Recipe of All Time – Meatballs!
Let me start with my meatball recipe. I gotta tell you that I felt a little guilty accepting compliments because it was by far the easiest recipe I have ever made. Ever.
You don’t even need to write this down. You will remember! Here goes:
- Get a giant bag of frozen meatballs from Sam’s or Cosco’s
- Get a bottle of your favorite BBQ Sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s is my favorite but I used Stubb’s Sweet Heat because it was a new bottle that hadn’t been opened)
- Dump meatballs in a crock pot
- Pour the bottle of BBQ sauce over the frozen balls
- Turn on low for 6 hours
Could an app be any easier??? No, I tell you. It cannot.
The Ultimate Rum Punch Recipe
Moving on. My 2nd recipe is for Ultimate Rum Punch.
Where do you go to find a recipe for rum punch? The Caribbean of course! I found Chris of www.CaribbeanPot.com to teach me.
I made his recipe with the exact measurements and it was way too sweet for me so I toned down the grenadine.
Check out Chris making his Ultimate Rum Punch.
If you like the Rum Punch that you find on tropical beaches, this recipe is for you. If you think those drinks are a little too sweet then add only 1/2 cup to one cup of Grenadine. A little goes a long way.
Also, if this recipe seems like they contain A LOT of Rum, they do. So this is another area you might want to start with a smaller portion and add more to taste.
Remember, you can always add more.
