I belong to a few Facebook groups and every now and then, I find an artist that I just have to contact.
This was the case with Marion Kaiser.
Marion makes beautiful soaps that I wanted to reach out and grab one. I was thrilled when she agreed to answer a few questions for soap maker beginners.
Her business is called Louisiana Sunshine Soap Company.
Let’s learn from her.
What hobby are you good at?
Soapmaking – Cold Process & Hot Process Methods
How long have you been doing it?
How did you get good at it?
I researched both methods of soapmaking on the Internet and took Leisure Arts classes at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
What advice would you give to beginners? What shortcuts or secrets can you share?
Don’t let anything intimidate you in trying new things. Soapmaking is a wonderful hobby or business, if you just take the proper safety precautions and don’t “bite off more than you can chew” at the beginning.
Start with a basic recipe and procedure and then work your way to other, more complicated, recipes later as you build expertise.
Are you a member of any local or national organization/club related to your hobby? If yes, please share the name and benefits of belonging.
There are several benefits of joining the organizations that I belong to (the benefits are many, but here are a few):
1. The ability to network with like-minded individuals with whom you can share experiences with about your craft and businesses
2. Taking classes thru these organizations
3. Discounts to buy from suppliers
4. The Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetic also offers a free website, with membership, thru Volusion
5. Discounted business insurance

What has helped me so far, is that there have been so many supportive customers, other business people, my local SCORE mentorship organization (SCORE Baton Rouge is a nonprofit association providing free and confidential business counseling tailored to meet the needs of small business and their personal objectives. They help small business people start or manage their business by face to face counseling, email counseling or seminars, workshops and business round tables.), and lastly my family and friends.
