Do you know how to sew?
I learned in high school but not before I sewed the armhole shut (not once but twice!) of a simple blouse.
That experience taught me that I wasn’t talented enough to watch TV and sew.
I would, though, like to introduce you to a sewing expert.
Meet Julie of NotSewStrange, as she shares her incredibly inspiring sewing journey.
Prepare to be impressed.

What hobby are you good at?
I have a few from knitting, crocheting to sewing! But lately with the birth of my twins I enjoy sewing more.
How long have you been doing it and why did you start? What got you interested?
I’ve been sewing for about 30 years (yikes).
My mom always had her sewing machine out on the kitchen table.
When I went to bed at night, she would sew dresses for me or my Barbies.
I made my first piece of clothing when I was 12.
It was a lime green with pink elephants pair of overalls!
I’ve sewn since then.
I attended fashion school and went on to work in the fashion industry as a designer.
What are the benefits for you? What do you get out of it? Why is this your passion?
I love that I can create a piece in a short period of time (compared to knitting) or that I can put it to the side and come back to it easily.
I also love that I can listen to my favorite shows or podcasts while sewing.
My sewing room is in the basement so it allows me to get some “alone” time.
How did you get good at it?
Sleeve heads are hard but you get the hang of it after a while.
Like anything in life you have to start somewhere and the more you do it, the better you become.
Like they say, it doesn’t get easier, you just get better.
What advice would you give to beginners? What shortcuts or secrets can you share?
Don’t be intimidated by a sewing machine.
These days you can watch YouTube tutorials for anything.
Also, if you are going to quilt or sew woven cottons use a walking foot.
Trust me, it makes all the difference!
If you happen to make money from your interest, do you have a website, Etsy store, Facebook page, other social media, that you would like to share?

Any other information that you would like to share?
Pregnant with my twins, I realized that no decorative element matched the style I wanted to give my nursery.
Too pink, too similar, too girly.
I wanted more for them; more modern accessories, something different.
By combining my 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, to my desires as a modern mom who wants the best for her children, I built my own business wanting to help all the other moms in the same situation as me.
From there was born NotSewStrange.
