Do you ever find life lessons in unexpected places?
I took a trip to San Diego because I had never been before and I highly recommend visiting. It is so beautiful.
We did what most tourists do and we went to the world famous San Diego Zoo.
It was quite an experience. The park is really amazing and the animals incredible.
I have to admit that while observing various wildlife, I picked up a few life lessons for myself.
1. Go For What You Want (from the honey badger)
We got hooked on the honey badger when we heard Randall narrate a National Geographic video on this creature (check it out here). Bottom line is nothing can stop the honey badger. Life lesson – don’t let anything stand in the way of you getting what you want.
2. Recognize Your Beauty (from the flamingos)
You really are a beautiful creature. Recognize it. Accept it. Love it.
3. Be Proud of Who You Are (from the camel)
Guess what day it is? No, seriously, I love the smile on this camel’s face. Be proud of who you are today, right now. Not someday, not hoping to be better, but really proud that you are YOU.
4. Be Fearless (from the gorilla)
This guy walked right up to us, sat down and gave us this look. Of course, there is nothing for this gorilla to fear but it is a good reminder that YOU have nothing to fear. Mimic this look and face head on whatever comes at you.
5. Don’t Care About What Others Think (from the pandas)
This mom and her baby were happy to sit there and eat lunch. They didn’t care that we were there watching. They didn’t care what we were thinking. They didn’t care about what we thought about them. They were happy just being there. Be happy being you wherever you are doing whatever you do.
6. Be Pampered (from the zebra and the elephant)
This zebra was happy to let the “human” brush him and care for him and that was OK. Actually, it’s better than OK.
If an elephant can take the time to get a pedicure, so can YOU!
7. Do Whatever It Takes to Have Your Own Space (from the lion)
Is this not hilarious??? It’s gross and funny all at the same time. Everyone should have their own space so even if you have to put up a sign DO IT! Put up your boundaries and enjoy your space!
8. Take Time for Yourself (from the monkey)
When I saw this monkey flat on his back just enjoying himself, I thought WHY NOT??? Why not have a time when you can reflect, plan, and have some quiet time. That’s just good advice.
9. Work on Improving Your Memory (from the elephant)
When I see an elephant, I always think, “You really need to work on your memory!” Elephants are known for having great memories so when I see one I am reminded that I need to do whatever it takes to work on remembering!
10. Be Aware (from the hippo)
I think it’s just good advice to always be conscious of your surroundings not just because I live in Dallas, but it’s important to be suspicious, be cautious and know what is around. Maybe, I’m a little paranoid but it’s not paranoia if they really are out to get you!
11. Relax with Your Sweetie (from the lions)
Aw! Isn’t this sweet??? The King of the Jungle and his honey just need a break from WOWing the general public and get some rest. Then, after you’ve had a good nap, go and conquer the jungle!
12. Enjoy Your Family (from the giraffes)
Everyone has the “best” family but sometimes it is important to stop and remember those in your family especially when they live far away. Send up a little prayer. Love them. Appreciate them.
13. Have Fun with Friends (from the polar bears)
There is nothing like seeing two polar bears playing in the water to remind me that friends are fantastic and if you are blessed with having some, enjoy them and have a good time!
I hope you enjoyed this trip to the world famous San Diego Zoo and that you realize we can all learn something from wherever we are and with whoever we come in contact with.
What lesson did you learn from the animals?
