I heart green smoothies! Love them! Can’t get enough of them! Actually, my Montana sister got me hooked on them a while ago and I have never looked back.
Bring out the NutriBullet!
So one morning while visiting my sister, she decided to make us smoothies. I was impressed. I remember I went through a Magic Bullet stage and it seemed to take a lot of ingredients for not a lot of drink. The Magic Bullet also crapped out after about 2 months so I hadn’t had a homemade smoothie for years.
She was paranoid that I wouldn’t drink anything green so she wouldn’t let me watch and then tried to camouflage the drink in a colored cup. One taste and I was hooked. So good! I think I even bought the NutriBullet on Amazon before I got back to Dallas! Get a red one like me!
What You Need
NutriBullet or High Powered Blender
Leafy Green Vegetable – Spinach and/or Kale
Fruit – I like banana but you can use any kind
Frozen Fruit – I use a tropical blend to take me on a mental trip to Jamaica!
Flax or Chia Seeds – pick one – this is what will keep you full until lunch time
Liquid – I usually use water but have used a plant-based milk like almond, coconut, etc.
Why Would You Even Want to Make a Smoothie?
- They are good for you – seriously – look at the ingredients!
- They are addictive – with my lengthy list of questionable vices, I decided to add ONE good one
- They will clean you out! If you are having digestive issues – constipation, bloating, or other types of grossness – drinking one of these will have you sorted out in the bathroom in no time!
- They are really easy to make. I’m no Julia Childs and I can pull this off quicker than you can say, “Is that really green???”
- They are delicious! Try it. You’ll see.
Let’s Make a Green Smoothie!
Get your ingredients and blender ready and let’s go!
Step 1: Add the Leafy Green Vegetable
I used spinach but have used a spinach/kale combo and it was delicious. You just have to mix it a little longer if you use kale so you are not chewing your smoothie.
Step 2: Add Your Favorite Fruit
I love bananas. They are my favorite but I have used grapes or apples when I ran out of bananas.
Step 3: Add Frozen Fruit
I love adding frozen fruit because to make a slushy, icy drink instead of a smoothie. The more frozen fruit you use, the icier your drink is. As I mentioned earlier, I use a tropical frozen mix that has strawberries, mangoes, peaches, and pineapple. I have used frozen blueberries with the banana and it is delicious.
It’s so fun trying different variations.
Step 4: Smash!
I think this is a Rev Original step. There is a line on the NutriBullet container that says MAX. You are supposed to put ingredients below that line. I guess I just get carried away so sometimes I have to add Step 4: Smash!
See! Now all the stuff is below the MAX line. Ingenious, I say!
Step 5: Add Flax Seeds OR Chia Seeds
Sometimes I skip this step if I don’t have flax or chia but I definitely get hungrier way before it’s time, if I don’t add some kind of filling seed. This time, I used flax. I usually just throw some in but I measured it out today for those who prefer exact instructions.
Please note, if you have a sensitivity when it comes to swallowing seeds, nuts, etc., put the flax seeds in the blender first and blend until very fine. This step will certainly assist those prone to chocking!
Step 6: Add Liquid
I usually use water because I am often out of the plant-based milk. I really can’t tell a difference in the taste. This part will be your preference. The fruit is sweet enough for me not to miss the milk.
However, if you are one known for having a sweet tooth, add a packet of stevia or a few drops of liquid coconut flavored stevia makes this smoothie taste even more tropical!
Now, look how awesome that is! Sometimes, after I put the lid on, I shake it up so the spinach doesn’t stick to the bottom.
Step 7: Blend
Let’s get this mess together. Blend until you have the desired consistency. If you used all frozen fruit, you may need to add a little more liquid.
Step 8: Enjoy!
Now, if Dr. Driven would have known the exact color of his tasty treat, he NEVER would have tried it! Just like my sister wasn’t sure if I would go for a green goo drink, I KNOW he wouldn’t have! So, I tricked him the first few times. I served it up in a green glass.
I can’t remember how many smoothies, I served him before he asked if it was green. At least four. 😉
- Fresh Spinach Leaves
- Frozen Tropical Fruit
- Flax Seeds
- Water or Almond Milk
- For a sweeter smoothie, add a packet of stevia OR a few drops of liquid coconut flavored stevia
- Put flax seeds in a high speed blender and blend until fine
- Add spinach, banana, frozen fruit and milk
- Blend until desired consistency
- Add ice if needed for more frozen slush
